An actor was detained on Wednesday, according to Los Angeles police, after three women claimed he gave them a “false sense of security” before sexually abusing them on dates.
Since the 1990s, the 52-year-old actor has been in theater, movie, and television productions. Among his roles include that of Baptist clergyman and broadcaster Pat Robertson in the 2021 movie “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” starring Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain.
Los Angeles police said in a statement on Wednesday that they have identified three women who have accused Mr. Olds of sexually abusing them since 2013. Two additional females have also reported “less violent sexual conduct.” With seven severe charges of sexual assault against him, Mr. Olds is being held without bond amounting to $3.5 million.
It wasn’t immediately apparent if Mr. Olds was represented by counsel.
According to Los Angeles police, detectives think there may be more victims in other parts of the nation who have not yet come forward because Mr. Olds travels frequently for work.
Officers also reported that Mr. Olds, a Yale alumnus hailing from New York, met and set up dates with women using his Ivy League standing and film profession. According to reports, he used dating apps to meet some of the women.
On January 19, 2023, one of the three women—a 41-year-old—came forward to allege that Mr. Olds had sexually assaulted her at her Los Angeles home. Subsequently, in 2013, two more women reported experiencing similar assaults.
Supervisory Detective Brent Hopkins of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Special Assault Section stated in a statement, “We kept hearing the same story. Mr. Olds utilized severe brutality to carry out these attacks after first charming his victims. Before they dared to come forward, some of these victims endured years of suffering in secret. After he’s off the streets, we want to make sure that everyone gets an opportunity to be heard.”
Two episodes of “NCIS: Los Angeles” and one episode of the NBC series “Blindspot” are among Mr. Olds’ television credits, according to IMDb. In the Roundabout Theatre Company’s 1997 staging of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge,” he performed as Rodolpho on the New York stage.
